Welcome to 2017: How to Burn 600 Calories in 20-Minutes

Hello readers! I am VERY late to the gate in my first blog post of the New Year, however this one is worth the wait (Happy 2017 by the way!)

Last month, I had the incredible opportunity to try out EMS Training, a total body workout that burns up to 600 calories in TWENTY MINUTES.

Called “the next wave of exercise,” EMS is already HUGE in Dubai and Germany, and very popular in most of Europe. However, the machine is only available at two locations in the United States: The Plaza Hotel and The Core Club. I visited La Palestra gym at The Plaza Hotel to try out EMS, and it was definitely different than any workout than I’ve done before.

EMS stands for Electric Muscle Stimulation, because it uses electric currents to stimulate your muscles (the current works with your brain to send impulses through your central nervous system to stimulate and enhance muscle contractions—super high-tech stuff!) In a nut shell, my personal trainer connected me to the machine via wires, then sent my muscles into fat-burning contractions.  He adjusted the impulse intensity to suit my goals, and the muscle contractions were completely painless. The EMS device can address and stimulate all muscles groups individually and separately, which is awesome because I had my trainer focus the currents onto my “problem areas” – my thighs and arms.  As the currents contract your muscles, you build lean muscle while blasting off fat. EMS drastically improves strength, power, explosiveness, and endurance - which is why athletes like Usain Bolt and the Bayern Munich soccer team have EMS as a staple in their training regimens.

After the 20-minute workout (which includes jumping jacks, push-ups and planks) you have the option of doing a 10-minute recovery phase, with helps with blood flow and muscle repair. This was definitely necessary, since my muscles already felt sore in the places where the wires had been attached to me.

Incredibly, you can use the EMS machine to pin-point the areas on your body where you’d like to lose fat, as well as the places you’d like to stimulate muscle production. Additionally, it is a proven way to eliminate cellulite. The exercise is great for busy people who want to lose weight, build strength, and increase muscle in a fraction of the time traditional training takes.

The machine itself, called Miha BodyTec, originated from Germany and is run by a company called My 30 Minutes. There are only 2 locations in the entire country that have the machine, making it a very exclusive workout that celebrities and elite athletes swear by. If you don’t live in New York, don’t worry, the company is planning on opening more studios nation-wide.

I liked the results of my single EMS session. I was sore for a few days, so I am definitely a believer in the technology.  Don’t get me wrong—I stand by traditional exercise (and hard work) before anything else. However, burning 600 calories in 20-minutes was a treat! I felt like a celebrity (especially because La Palestra is located inside of the famed Plaza Hotel) and I had fun participating in such a fun science "experiment."  I will definitely go back for a quick session to stimulate some lean muscles before my next vacation.
